When Apple first launched Siri, they probably have planned on changing the world \u2013 but they might not have anticipated the extent of the shift in our perspective towards technological devices. It\u2019s true, much of the hype surrounding Siri is a direct derivative of the fact that it\u2019s an Apple flagship product (if you can call Siri \u201ca product\u201d), but even a harsh critic would have a tough time overlooking the importance of the new & shiny personal assistant, on which Jobs had all his chips on. Countless people had uploaded videos of them interacting with Siri. BuzzFeed lists of the \u201c20 of the funniest Siri reactions\u201d were published, and even a dramatized version of the topic was immortalized in the movie \u201cHer\u201d, starring Scarlett Johansson as Siri-not-Siri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more we learn about automation, and the devices around us get smarter \u2013 we see a larger array of voice user interfaces in various products. When I first learned about the feature to dictate where \u201cI\u2019m going to\u201d on Waze or Google Maps, or set a reminder without typing keys, I assumed we\u2019d see an increasing number of such activities in apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5982\u679c\u51e0\u5e74\u524d\u6211\u4eec\u8c08\u8bba\u7269\u8054\u7f51\uff08\u201c\u7269\u8054\u7f51\u201d\uff0c\u4e00\u4e2a\u58f0\u79f0\u6bcf\u4e2a\u8bbe\u5907\u90fd\u662f\u57fa\u4e8e\u7f51\u7edc\u7684\u5b9e\u4f53\u7684\u6982\u5ff5\uff09\uff0c\u90a3\u4e48\u4eca\u5929\u6211\u4eec\u770b\u5230\u5b83\u4e0d\u518d\u662f\u79d1\u5e7b\u60f3\u6cd5\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u4e8b\u5b9e\u3002\u8fd9\u79cd\u8d8b\u52bf\u5df2\u7ecf\u5728\u4e24\u67b6\u98de\u673a\u76f8\u4e92\u5e2e\u52a9\u7684\u60c5\u51b5\u4e0b\u9010\u6e10\u6d88\u5931\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If we talked about IoT (the \u201cInternet of Things\u201d, a concept that claims that every device is a network-based entity) a few years back, nowadays we see that it\u2019s no longer a sci-fi idea, but a factual reality. This trend had come to pass with the help of two planes that had grown one towards the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first \u2013 the fact that there\u2019s \u201can app for everything\u201d. Most electric appliances, in one way or another, are being controlled with an app. It\u2019s starting with internet-connected light bulbs, via printers and smart TV sets, up until the ability to lock your front door by clicking a large, clear button in a dedicated app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second \u2013 smart assistants. A few years ago this was a science fiction scenario, but today we can see that everyone\u2019s onboard on this. It had started with Siri, made its way to the Amazon Echo devices featuring Alexa, Google also joined the bandwagon with their Assistant (I wonder why they\u2019ve decided not to give their persona a human name) and even Microsoft had pulled Cortana from the videogame world into reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u6240\u6709\u8fd9\u4e9b\u90fd\u4e0e\u60a8\u7684\u5e10\u6237\u76f8\u5173\u8054\uff0c\u80fd\u591f\u63d0\u9192\u60a8\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u4f1a\u8bae\u6216\u8bbe\u7f6e\u8ba1\u65f6\u5668\u6765\u716e\u9e21\u86cb\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u8fd9\u4e9b\u5e94\u7528\u7a0b\u5e8f\u5177\u6709\u7684\u6f5c\u529b\u4e0d\u4ec5\u4ec5\u53ef\u4ee5\u5e2e\u52a9\u7528\u6237\u505a\u4e8b\u6216\u8bb0\u4f4f\u4e8b\u60c5\uff01<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All of these are connected to your accounts, are able to remind you of an important meeting or set a timer for boiling an egg, but the potential that these applications have is much more than just helping a user do or remember stuff!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As far as daily routine goes \u2013 connecting my phone to my wireless car speaker allows me to say \u201cHey Google, good morning!\u201d \u2013 a phrase that would make sure my curtains at home are shut, the air conditioner is off, the lights are dimmed, will update me on upcoming traffic in my route, read out loud items from my daily agenda \u2013 and maybe even will top it all with launching my \u201cdriving\u201d Spotify playlist. By saying exactly 4 words, I get a complete suite of actions, with a large portion of delight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sheer amount of products that are pre-based on voice, or offer such components, is on the rise. Scratching the surface, I can mention the Philips and Xiaomi lightbulbs that are voice controlled and offer a gallery of moods and scenarios. More notable solutions include the infrared-based RM-Pro device that controls an array of devices, products that control your water heater and AC, refrigerators, autonomic vacuums, blindfolds, power sockets and more \u2013 the sky\u2019s the limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It means that our entire house can be online and controlled on request, and more importantly \u2013 after an initial setup, some of the applicative interfaces can be deemed irrelevant once \u201cplugged\u201d into your Assistant. In terms of accessibility<\/a>, these capabilities also help us welcome new and untapped audiences that require the extra attention (such as the visually-impaired). There isn\u2019t a visual interface, with near-zero screens. A (hopefully short) on-boarding process takes place, with an obvious need to plan it right. I\u2019m sure that most of us already invest time and thought into planning, researching and implementing the takeaways learned from our users\u2019 behavior, all with the intention to be able to accomplish the central action in the most convenient and transparent manner. The content must be clear and focused enough to be deemed a worthy answer to a spoken question. I\u2019m referring to technical preparation that affects Google\u2019s (and other companies\u2019) ability to scan and interpret the text. In case there are marketing efforts taking place \u2013 it\u2019s crucial for them to be in line with the new experience we\u2019re trying to generate engagement with. Those are no longer just algorithms, but virtual systems that seamlessly connect to physical appliances, while negating the need for \u201cofficial apps\u201d. In order for us to create the perfect illusion, we must aim for the most fluent experience possible. A major part of creating voice-based interfaces is dictated by the need to create detailed scenario trees.
